Sonnet lviii - Owe No Homage To The Sun

Owe No Homage Unto The Sun Cover Art

This is the debut album by new Philippines band Sonnet xviiii. Although there are times it seems like they must have listened to a lot of old shoegaze records from the early nineties there is something a little bit special about this record which makes it quite addictive. Anyway you don't need me to tell you about it because the band have decided to release the whole thing for free and I think that will turn out to be a good move because a lot of people are going to gain pleasure from this and hopefully support Sonnet lviii in the future.

1.  Car Crash At 95 mph
2.  Oceans (And Blue Skies)
3. Hurricane Aurora

  1. This is a surprisingly good record. While, within the first bar, it declares itself indebted to the classic sound of 1991/2, (Ride, Chapterhouse, and Catherine Wheel particularly), it has more than enough original character and invention to mark it out as no mere pastiche. The playing is of a high order and tight. It sounds to me as though more than one vocalist takes lead duties, as some vocals sit a little awkwardly with me...perhaps I just like it more when the voice is not quite so forward in the mix. In any event, fans of shoegaze should listen without hesitation.

I consider their best songs to be Oceans, Hurricane Aurora and Treasure Heaven - none of them sounds like their influences. I initially have a tape recording from one of their shows over the radio (I used to live in Manila. They have dedicated followers but not that many.) and have been looking for their CD "picturesque" and could not find it. It is a good thing that they released it over the Internet. Yes, this release have everything that is in picturesque plus more!
