Pod Fodder (Volume Twelve)

1. Aldo Vanucci & Featurecast - Walk Like A Man (fdel remix) (Funk Weapons)
12" Vinyl. Taken from the "Blue Grassed Devil" EP.

2. A. Armada - The Moon Shifts The Sea The Sea Shapes The Shore The Shore Shakes The Sand The Sand Sinks The Ship (Hello Sir)
Now that's what I call a song title. Taken from the album "Anam Cara".

3. Japanther - Bumpin' Rap Tapes (Wantage)
This track comes from the new Japantgher record "Tut Tut Now Shake Ya Butt" which can only be described as excellent.

4. The Mountain Goats - Sarcofago Live (4AD)
This is one of the tracks from the bands new "Satanic Messiah" EP which although you can buy it as a download is also avaliable as a limited edition double 7" pack which is limited to just 666 copies and can only be aquired from their shows. That's buggered me up then.

5. Mr Scruff - Donkey Ride feat. Quantic (Ninja Tune)
It's been ages since we last had a Mr Scruff album to pick out noses to. This long awaited new offering "Ninja Tuna" carries on pretty much in the vein of previous material mash ups, breakbeats and jazzy bits.

7th November - London, Matter
8th November - Bristol, Academy
13th November - Leamington, Assembly

7. Maikotobranco - (Small Finger)
Another track from the fine album "Star".

8. Subterra - Serengeti (Frequency)

9. The Great Shakes - Chinatown (Lap)
The great Shakes appear to have two single out at the moment. "It Won't Stop" on the fantasic NRONE label from Norwich and this on on Lap records from somewhere else. I'm not sure which one I prefere but we've played plenty of NRONE stuff recently so...

11th November - London, Oh Inverted World @ The Old Queens Head
12th November - Liverpool, Korova
18th December - Norwich, NRONE calling @ The Waterfront (with The Barlights, Rosalita & Tinman)

10. Foot Village - Urination (Tome)
Taken from the album "Friendship Nation" which was released months ago and I heard for the first time last week. How can something like this slip through the net?

11. Submorphics - Stray Bullets (Future Retro)
If you want to get your tune on Burning World just get hold of a load of old western movies and drop samples into your tracks. Works every time.

12. Cody - Rounder (Shinkansen)
Bit of a forgotten classic this one. It's the lead track from the "Rounder EP " which was released through the Matt Haynes Shinkansen Records in 1999.

13. The Rulers - Wrong Embryo (Trojan)

14. Windy & Carl - Forever (Kranky)
Taken from the album "Songs For The Broken Hearted".

15. Champagne Riot - Scandinavian Warfare (Shelflife)
More top tunes from the Shelflife crew. Champagne Riot are, as you might expect Scandinavian and therefore have the natural genetic qualities required to make perfect indiepop tunes. This track is the first on their new ep "Paris & I" which is available on CD and 7" although I don't know if you get all six tracks on the vinyl version.... and you do need all six tracks.

The Wedding Present - Loughborough University, 30th October 1985

This is definitely one of the earliest Wedding Present performance I've ever heard. Probably one of the earliest in existence. Recorded back in 1985 in the refectory at Towers Halls of residence at Loughborough University where the Leeds based outfit were supporting Television Personalities. I don't have a recording of their set but I suspect the Weddoes may just have been the highlight of the night.

Well if it's just a good tune you're looking for then you won't need to look much further than the new EP by Last Gang who come from just down the road in Wakefield. The new EP is produced by a certain Steven Street who if memory serves produced some pop gems with The Darling Buds years ago.

My preferred mix of the new single. Out 17th November.

7. Marnie Stern - Steely (Kill Rock Stars)

9. The Low Miffs - Cressida (Art Goes Pop)
This is one of twenty three tracks on a new compilation from the Leeds based label Art Goes Pop which is cunningly titled " The Glasgow School Of Art Goes Pop" which, if you've not already guessed contains tons of bands from north of the border. Visit the Art Goes Pop website where I'm sure you'll be able to furnish yourself with all the information your brain can handle. "The Glasgow School Of Art Goes Pop" will be released on 1st December.

10. Nicole Moudaber - The Slap (Original Mix) (Azuli)

11. To The Bones - Sonic Mammoth (Medici)
This bunch of Lancastrians almost slipped through the net. Everyone except Joe Soap here seems to know all about To The Bones. As far as I know this is their latest single and even this has been around a couple of months now. The debut album "Duke Type A" was released at the end of September. I haven't got a copy yet but judging on this track it's about time I found one.

12. Foot Village - Club Trax I-III (Too Pure)
This is the best record you'll hear this week so turn it up as loud as you can because your neighbours will love it too (or they might call the police). Wooooooooo

13. Jared Mees & The Grown Children - Bees (Tender Loving Empire)
Taken from the album "Caffeine, Achohol, Sunshine, Money".

14. Mutators - Psychic Tapes (Nominal)
Taken from the brilliant album "Secret Life" which has barly left the turntable this week. Every home needs a copy of this record but alas there are only 820 in existence at the moment, 412 on red vinyl, 408 on blue vinyl. As far as I know there are still copies available so do yourself a favor and get along to the Nominal records website and make that purchase.

15. Reamer - Maniac (Reaction)

Half Man Half Biscuit - London, The Forum, 16th October 2008

Half Man Half Biscuit bootlegs are like Half Man Half Biscuit gigs, all too scarce (which is probably why) so it's always nice when one does come along. This is a blistering two hour set recorded recently down in the capital. The sound quality is ok but it does sond as though it was recorded from the back and the bootlegger's mate has a very annoying habit of rabbiting on about crap. Apparently he thinks he was the youngest person in there. If anyone knows who the big mouthed t**t is could you please give him a prod in the nostril from me.
Great gig though.

The Fall - Aberdeen, Lemon Tree, 10th Ocober 2008

I think it's about time we had some more Fall around these parts. I just wish the sound quality on this recording was a little better because it's a first rate performance from the mighty ones. Interestingly the Smithster disappears after about half an hour. I heard a rumour he had a touch of flu but short set or not it's a great performance, this line up really seem to be gelling now and I can't wait to see them in York in a few weeks time.

5th December - London, Camden Roundhouse

3. Darkus - Dubbed Jah (Slim Blue Remix) (Bassrock)
Darkus is basically Simon Dark who somehow manages to combine being a builder, running an online record shop and churning out top shit like this all at the same time. Now that's what I call multi-tasking.

4. Fight Like Apes - Recyclable Ass (Model Citizen)
This is definitely my favorite record at the moment. The album is called "The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion" and is one of the best debuts of the year.... if you live in Ireland where the record is now avaliable. It's due for a UK release early 2009 so it could well be one of the best records of next year as well. Regardless make sure you pick up a copy of this as soon as you get chance. Really good shit.

6. The Unremarkables - 21st Century Ghost (NR One)
Title track from the Norwich bands new EP which will be released 11th November.

29th November - Lincoln, The Library Bar
5th February - Norwich, The Blueberry

7. Stars And Sons - In The Ocean (Self-Released)
Stars and Sons are from Brighton and last year they sent me a very nice CD with a very roughly painted hand made sleeve which scratched anything it came into contact with. I think it was called "The Goat Show EP" or something like that. Anyway this is a track from the new single which will be released on 17th November. Apparently they're going to be on the telly on the very same day (bit of a coincidence) with some footage from their "In The City Show". You can see this on something called "Channel M" which means absolutely nothing to me but can allegedly be discovered on Sky channel 203 and Virgin Media channel 878. Godspeed my son.

30th October - London, Luminaire
16th November - Brighton, Prince Albert
28th November - Brighton, Brighton Calling @ The Providence
4th December - London, Water Rats

8. Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan (Fuck Buttons Remix) (Tour CD)
Fuck Buttons do a pretty fine job on this one. There's even some of the tinking from "Sweet Love For Planet Earth" at times. Taken from the tour EP which can be bought, stolen or begged for at the gigs the bands share.

21st October - Edingburgh, Corn Exchange
23rd October - Manchester, Academy
24th October - London, Hammersmith Apollo

9. DB83 - Baader (Dreadzone Remix)

22nd October - Paris, Fleche d'Or Club
4th December - Manchester, Roadhouse (with A Place To Bury Strangers)
20th December - Manchester, The Green Windmill (FREE ENTRY!!!)

11. Go Go Charlton - Song For The Here And The Hereafter (Lofty)
Taken from the album "Beaucoup Schlager".

12. Jeremy - Silly Love Songs (Download)
This is a track which Norweigan band Jeremy made available as a free download single last month. Their debut album "Smells Like Rain, Feels Like Sun" has just been released in Norway and I'm trying to track down a copy as we speak.

13. 2 Hot 2 Sweat - Half-Assed Rom Com (NROne)
Norwich based NROne REcords really is putting out some top stuff at the moment. This is particularly sweet and if you get a move on you can purchase it as a limited edition of 250 CDs which come in a snazzy 7" sleeve when it hits the public domain on 10th November. I always was a sucker for packaging.

20th December - Norwich, Arts Centre

14. Maikotobranco - Tell Me Why (Small Finger)
Taken from the album "Star" which is a Japanese release but I'm sure you'll be able to find it outside Japan. According to the Small Finger website this was the first release on the label and the second is by a band called "Cubic Star Minimal Orchestra" who sound facinating so I'll try and get hold of a copy asap and let you know.

Pod Fodder (Volume Nine)

Download Here

1. Wild Billy Childish & The Musicans Of The British Empire - Little Miss Contrary (Damaged Goods)
Taken from Billy's latest offloading of angst "Thatchers Children".

24th October - London, Dirty Water Club @ Boston Arms

2. Deerhoof - Fresh Born (ATP)
Taken from the new album "Offend Maggie" which I think sounds a lot more more mellow than their previous outings.

3. Oblisk - Beruit (Double A)
I do like bands who have mastered the art of sounding bleak and solitary. Sorry it's probably just me, I've been at the wine again. Taken from the album "Tune In/Tune Out".

4. Superchunk - The Question Is How Fast (Merge)
Single from.... erm..... ages ago. Nice purple vinyl too (just in case your interested).

5. Fuck Buttons - Colours Move (Mogwai Remix) (Tour CD)
This is one of the tracks on the limited edition tour CD which will be available at the forthcoming Mogwai/Fuck Buttons gigs. I don't think this is the best version of "Colours Move" but that's probably why it's on the tour CD.

21st October - Edinburgh, Corn Exchange
23rd October - Manchester, Academy
24th October - London, Hammersmith Apollo

6. Disconcerts - Chance Remark (Structurally Sound)
Track from the longf awaited new single by Chichesters finest.

19th October - Southampton, Hamptons (with The Bishops)
31st October - Chichester, Chi Inn

7. Marnie Stern - Shea Stadium (Kill Rock Stars)
This is one of the nice surprises of the week. I've never heard anything by Marnie Stern before this week and already it feels like she's part of the family. It's actually the second Marnie Stern album and I'm going to try and track down a copy of the first record asap. The album has the really annoying title "This Is It And I Am It And You Are It And So Is That And He Is It And She Is It And It Is It And That Is That. Hereafter referred to as the new record. (phew)

8. The Dentists - Little Engineers Set (Spruck)
Taken from the 1985 album "Some People Are On The Pitch They Think It's All Over It Is Now".

9. Loyal Trooper - Nottingham Wasn't Built For Me (Self Released)
Loyal Trooper is Andy Waller who has spent much of his recent life recording this 6 track EP in his bedroom in London. The more you listen to this the more it gets stuck in your head. The "One Day All This Will Work Out" EP will be available from somewhere (try his My Space page) from the 3rd November. Recommended!

12th October - Brighton, The Globe
13th October - London, Rhythm Factory
14th October - London, The Old Queens Head
16th October - London, The George & Vulture
17th October - Luton, George II
20th October - Nottingham, The Golden Fleece

22nd November - Leeds, Cardigan Arms

10. Bromheads Jacket - You'll Lose It (Marquis Cha Cha)
Taken from the Sheffield bands new album "On The Brain" which has seen some less than favorable reviews in some places. Personally I think it's certainly as good if not better than the first album "Dits From The Commuter Belt".

11th October - Barnstaple, Inn On The Square
12th October - Exeter, Cavern
13th October - London, Kings
15th October - Stoke, Sugarmill

13th October - Edinburgh, Sneaky Pete's (with The Ghost)
1st November - Preston, Mad Ferret
4th November - Leicester, The Shed
5th November - London, Cross Kings
7th November - Peterborough, Met Lounge

12. Skywave - Don't Say Slow (Amendment) 7" single.

13. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Ice Cream Truck (Tomlab)
Taken from the "Town Topic EP". If you buy it from itunes you can get no less than thirteen tracks! This track is simply gorgeous. Casiotone are currently on tour in the U.S.

14. Motionless Battle - Dissinterlude ()
Taken from the album "The Fortress Of Dischord".

15. The Jams - It's Grim Up North (KLF Communications)
Mr Vincent said "KICK OUT THE JAMS MOTHERF****R"..... so I did. This still sounds really nice as well. How many songs do you know that mention Cheadle Hulme and Lytham St Annes without batting an eyelid.

LOVVERS LIVE AT YORK

THE BASEMENT CITY SCREEN YORK,

PLEASE PLEASE YOU PRESENTS LOVVERS AND THE CALORIES.

THE LOVVERS WERE LOVED ON THE NIGHT OF A GREAT PERFORMANCE IN YORK.

The first band of any note on the night were a band from Birmingam called The Calories, which to tell you the truth I have not heard of before. The performance left me thinking just another punk attitude pop band nothing special but ok.....

The last band, The Lovvers from Nottingham were a great act to watch. I love this bands raw live sound which makes them come alive and slap you in the face................................and if you want any slapping in your face then lead singer Shaun will be up for that. This guy likes to dance in the crowd like a three legged chicken on ten cans of Red Bull, tripping and pushing anybody in the crowd. The attitude of this guy and the bands music is infectious so go and see them live.

19th October - Southampton, Hamptons
21st October - Brighton, Albert

4. Luna - Outdoor Miner (Radiation)
Single from 1996 and one of the better covers of the Wire classic. Lush did a rather good version as well.

5. John Starlight - Road Rage (Popov Remix) (Cocoon)
12" single. I think I prefer this mix over the original mix on the a side.

6. Cop On The Edge - Spying On Boys (Demo)
Cop On The Edge are a five piece from South London who's tracks I'm rather enjoying at the moment. I don't thin it'll be too long before someone sees the light and releases proper records for them (I know I keep saying this but one day I really will get my label going). What is also worth mentioning is their "South Eats London" nights which take place at the New Cross Inn and sound very interesting indeed. If I lived a couple of hundered miles closer I'd check it out myself. The next one is on 16th October and features Rotary Ten, Django Django, Super Tennis (we like them) and Jonny Cola & The A Grades. I'll be in Leeds watching the Shred Yr Face Tour that night but i'd like a report if anyone feels like giving me one. The next one is on 20th November and features Pockets Filled With Matches, Ape Fight Ape and New Town Riot.

15th October - London, Odd Wednesdays @ The Legion
31st October - London, This is Modern Love @ New Cross Inn
7th November - Lomdon, Semiconductor Archives @ Cross Kings
14th November - Oxford, Quickfix @ The Wheatsheaf

7. Ballboy - Disney's Ice Parade (Pony Proof)
Taken from the new album "I Worked On The Ships". I think last time I mentioned this album I said it was a little bit too acoustic for my liking but on reflection it's a real grower. there's not a bad tune on it.

8. I Am Robot & Proud - Making A Case For Magic (Darla)
Taken from the album "Uphill City".

9. Times New Viking - Pagan Eyes (Matador)
This is the first track from the New York bands new EP "Stay Awake" which will be released through Matador on 21st October. Don't forget the band are going to be part of the Shred Yr Face Tour along with Los Campesinos and No Age throughout October. I seem to be typing the dates out for that almost every week at the moment so stuff it. Check further down this page to see if it comes to a town near you.

10. Fight Like Apes - Lend Me Your Face (Model Citizen)
I wasn't expecting to like this album too much. Don't ask me why, it's probably just some irrational fear of bands with animals in their name. Taken from the album "And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion".

13th October - Limerick, Dolans
14th October - Galway, Roisin Dubh

11. Joensuu 1685 - (You Shine) Brighter Than Light (Bone Voyage)
Taken from the Helsinki bands self-titled debut album.

12. Blacka Dan - My Kinda Woman (Promo)

13. Burningpilot - Accelerate (James Rutledge Remix) (Transgressive)
This is a track from the new Burningpilot single and you must admit this is a bit of a monster. I can't get over how much that guy sounds like Mark E Smith. There is an album in the pipeline which I think is called "Cold Caller". Watch this space.

23rd October - London, Old Blue Last
12th November - London, Catch

14. Fuck Buttons - Sweet Love For Planet Earth (Andrew Weatherall Remix) (ATP)
Oh my god!!! This is a monster. If you thought the Street Horrrsing" version of this was good just wait till you get your ear lobes round this. That Mr Weatherall really has done a job. Best get your dancing boots out, you're gonna need em. This track is on the b side of the new single "Colours Move" which was released last week. The band are currently on tour with Mogwai and if you go to a gig be sure to pick up a copy of the tour CD because it contains a rather good Mogwai remix of "Colours Move" which I dont think you can get anywhere else. If I remember I'll put it in next weeks Fodder.

21st October - Edinburgh, Corn Exchange
23rd October - Manchester, Academy
24th October - London, Hammersmith Apollo

15. My Bloody Valentine - To Here Knows When (Sony)
Taken from the re-mastered version of "Loveless" which will be released next week.

The Darling Buds - Port Talbot 16th July 1987

This bootleg was originally posted on this site almost three years ago and people still keep asking for it. The sound quality isn't perfect but I think this is a really good set. While I was searching for it (misfiled as usual) I came across other Darling Buds bootlegs from London School Of Oriental & African Studies (1988) & Glasgow Rooftops (1989). Let me know if you want to hear these and I'll get them online.

My Bloody Valentine - New York City 22nd September 2008

I thought it was about time we had another boot from the My Bloody Valentine tour which has now gone stateside and still sounds bloody loud. Rumours still persist about a new album next year but then they always have. Personally I'll believe it when I hear it.
